Scientific and Technological Initiation Program

The Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) offers its students unique opportunities for academic and scientific development. One of these opportunities is the Scientific and Technological Initiation Program (PICT), designed for undergraduate and high school students who wish to engage in scientific, technological, and innovation research. Coordinated by the Office of Graduate Studies (PROPG), the program promotes early integration of theory and practice throughout students’ academic journeys.
Established in 1991 and funded mainly by Brazil’s National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the program has since grown significantly. It now includes several scholarship modalities: PIBIC (Scientific Research), PIBITI (Technological Innovation), PIBIC-AF (Affirmative Action), and PIBIC-EM (for High School students). Through annual public calls, the program selects high-quality research proposals, engaging students in the full research process under the guidance of experienced UFPR faculty members and technical staff. This fosters the development of the next generation of scientists, professionals, and innovators.
In addition to strengthening academic training, the program is integrated into UFPR’s vibrant culture of research, innovation, and social commitment. Every year, the university hosts the SIEPE (Integrated Week of Teaching, Research, and Extension), a major academic event that highlights the work of students and faculty engaged in scientific research, technological development, community outreach, and cultural initiatives. For international students, the participation in the PICT means joining a dynamic and inclusive academic environment – one that values diversity, fosters collaboration, and celebrates knowledge in all its forms.
